“I started digging up my various training records, and frankly, I was a little surprised by the variety of work I’ve done, it really got me thinking about how this is an important acknowledgment. I’ll be recommending CertWORK+ to my members for a host of reasons”

“The way I see it, a program like this is helpful to the sector overall. Employees can use [CertWORK+] to certify their on-the-job skills, whereas employers can use it to substantiate their team’s caliber… address skills gaps, or legitimize the skills of new hires,” says Armindo deMedeiros, President, Local 480, United Steelworkers. “It’s really a win-win for everyone.”

At the age of 8, deMedeiros arrived with his family in British Columbia from the Isles of Azores, Portugal, unable to speak a word of English. He would grow up to build a lifelong career in the province’s manufacturing sector, and devote himself to advocating on the industry’s behalf.

“I started digging up my various training records, and frankly, I was a little surprised by the variety of work I’ve done,” says deMedeiros. “It really got me thinking about how this is an important acknowledgment. I’ll be recommending CertWORK+ to my members for a host of reasons.”

Since joining Teck Metals Limited in 1976 (formerly Cominco), deMedeiros has served as a Material Handler in the company’s Zinc, Smelter, and Tadanac Services operations. In 2003 he went on to join his local union, serving as a Guard, Trustee, Job Classification Chair, 480 Benefits Coordinator and Vice President before finally assuming the role of President in 2013.

Armindo deMedeiros was awarded Production Worker Material Handler CertWORK+ Certification in February 2016.
